Logo Ideas

To decide which Logo I will decide to use on my Local Newspaper I will be printing out a copy of this selection and then ask people to tick their favourite two Logo's, I will then ask them to put a tick to the side of their chosen Logo's so that I can tally up the results and therefore pick the overall favourite Logo which will catch peoples eyes the most!

The most popular Logo was the blue 'Sandhurst' logo second down on the left hand side with the stylish 'S' over the top of the 'Sandhurst' part. This logo goes well with my newspaper and will mix in nicely with the name of the paper on the top of the front page, I agree with peoples choices and think that this logo is the best one to put onto my newspaper to make it even more attractive!

I have decided to use the name 'Sandhurst in Detail', because I believe that it sounds quite formal and interesting, also with the 'in Detail' part of the name it shows people that this Local Newspaper will go into great detail about Sandhurst and what has been going on recently in their area. I also feel that this name will stick in peoples minds and therefore they will not forget to buy my Newspaper and also will tell their friends and family all about my Newspaper allowing more people will buy my Newspaper. The name of the paper looks fantastic in big bold white writting with the blue background to compliment eachother and I feel that this will definitly catch peoples eyes as they walk through their local post office or see someone else in Sandhurst reading my Newspaper.

My Newspaper will be able to be purchased in local post offices and by singing up to have one of my Newspapers delivered to your door. In shops my Local Newspaper will cost 70p which is quite a generous price given the information and effort that is put into every addition! To have my Local Newspaper delivered to your door it will cost you £1, this is because of the extra effort that is needed to deliver my papers and i will have to hire a paper boy which costs money, however i feel that both these prices are reasonable and people will definitely purchase my Newspaper everytime a new addition comes out.

On my billboard I will have the address for my web page standing out! hopefully people will see this and then go home and have a look at our website, this links the two together and makes me more customers, I will be placing my billboard on the side of the main Sandhurst road so that people will either drive, cycle or walk past my billboard and the majority of people in Sandhurst will see it if they are on the move, going to work for example, then my Newspaper will be in their head and hopefully they will go home or go to their closest shop and buy my Newspaper. I will also be placing smaller size versions of my billboard in a poster version outside post offices so it will attract people inside the shop to purchase my Newspaper.

Ideas for Second Page

On the very top of the second page I will have my Newspapers email address and the date that the Newspaper came out, this way people will know how to get onto my website if they need it and will also know the date so that they don’t end up reading an old Newspaper or its handy if they forget the date. Then on the far top left of the page I will have the page number and then a minimized version of the papers name that is on the front page.

Underneath the date, email address etc I will have two stories next to each other side by side, the story on the left will be about a new hairdressers/salon opening in Sandhurst! The headline will be, ‘“Trim” Salon has come to sandhurst!’ then underneath this headline there will be smaller text explaining the story in detail and then a picture of their latest work on the left of the text, this story will let people know about what is new in the area and also works as advertisements.

The other story which will be next to this one is about a local 63 year old footballer who still plays for Sandhurst.F.C’s first team! The headline is going to be, ’63 years old and still playing like a youngster!’ Underneath this headline there will be the usual smaller text which will explain the story in detail, then next to this text there will be a suitable picture that goes with the story.

Down the left hand side of the second page there will be the strip of pictures that work as a guide to the rest of the paper, they give a small picture of the story, a brief explanation and then the page number so people can find it easily. At the bottom of the second page there will be various advertisements dotted around to catch people’s fancy, then in the available space I will put pictures of ‘people you may know’ this will encourage people to buy my newspaper as they may see somebody that they know.

Ideas for Front Page

Name of the paper across the top in big bold writing! I will have the background a formal blue and then have the name of the paper on top in white writing; this will make the name of my paper stand out as the two colours work well together.

Main story on front page – Local School Edgbarrow’s Sixth Form football team makes it to the Regional finals of the ‘Collages Cup’!

Then in smaller text underneath it will explain how Edgbarrow’s football team had to get through 5 different rounds to get to this all important final which included schools from all over southern England! To the right of this text there will be a picture of Edgbarrow’s football team and then a page number which will show you where in the paper to find out more detail about the story. This story gives the local area a good feel as youngsters are achieving and giving their area a good name!

Down the left hand side of the front page there will be pictures and then page numbers and a brief explanation of the story which matches the picture, people can look for a story that appeals to them and know where they can find it further on in the Newspaper. This saves peoples time and gives them a little taster of what to expect in the Newspaper, this will also carry onto the next page down the left hand side so everything is covered. I will try and fit around 3 to 5 pictures/brief story explanations per page.

At the very bottom of the front page I will put various advertisements that have paid to be on the front page, these will be made so they do not look familiar to one another and made sure to stand out from the rest of the front cover. I will make sure that the advertisers name, email address, phone number and other details are all clearly laid out.

This billboard Newspaper advertisement for Deccan Chronicle Newspaper is clearly set out to attract the younger audience to the Newspaper, for example the slogan is 'FOR YOUNG MINDS', this proves that this newspapers target audience is the younger generations. It is quite a simple Billboard with minimal text and one main picture, this is quite a young way of doing it and therefore will attract youngsters! Also the use of an attractive women posing in a paradise, this will obviously attract male attention and also female as they may see this women as a role model and someone to look up to. On the women's top it says 'get both sides of the story' this is a good quote as it shows that this newspaper will explain it all to you in good detail.

In the bottom left of the billboard there is some text that says, '37% growth in readers in TN', this shows people that it is a successful Newspaper and is growing in the market, this will persuade people to buy the Newspaper as it is doing well and therefore must be interesting and worth buying. On the top left of the billboard there is a red box with white text in it saying, "To subscribe SMS" and then they tell you what to text them and the number that you need to text, this shows that it is for a younger audience as they tend to text a lot! And will know exactly how to do it so that they can subscribe to getting their Newspaper

In big bold red writing on the right side of the billboard it says, "NEWS MADE EXCITING" this shows that they like to make the news fun and different from all other Newspapers, this will encourage people to buy their Newspaper instead of other papers as they want something new that they will truly be interested in and buy the Newspaper regularly. The billboard appears to be on a roadside, this is a good place to put a billboard as people will drive past and see the advertisement and then think about purchasing the Newspaper based on the billboard.

I am making a Local Newspaper for Sandhurst, this paper will consist of all the information about Sandhurst and its surroundings, it will be written for people above the age of 16 because they will be interested in the Local news. My Newspaper will mainly consist of sports, achievements and touching story's which will make people feel good about their area and want to read my Newspaper every other day to find out in detail what has been going on in Sandhurst.

The placement of my product has to be right so that people will be able to see and purchase my newspaper with ease! Places where you can find Local Newspapers at the moment are places like news agents, post offices, Internet and you can sign up so you get your Local Parer delivered to your door! It is extremely important that people are aware of how to get hold of my product because if they do not know where to get it from then nobody is going to buy my Newspapers. Local Newspapers are usually put into shops in the Newspaper section, therefore to make sure that people buy my Newspaper over others I will have to make my front cover attractive and eye catching so that they will chose mine!

I will not only be doing a Local Newspaper, I will also be making a billboard to advertise my Newspaper and a web page which will also advertise my Newspaper and be a place where people can sign up to get my paper delivered to their door and have a sneak view of what to expect in the next addition, I will have to make sure that both my billboard and web page are bright and attractive, so that people will be caught by it and think about getting my Newspaper. My web page will go into more detail than my billboard as it will explain more about the Newspaper and it is easier to attract people on a web page than on a billboard as you have limited space. On my web page I will have contact information and advertisements that are linked to my Newspaper, with this information it is easy for them to have any questions answered and sign up for delivery to their door, the advertisements on my web page will be the same that are on my Newspaper, this brings money into the Newspaper and helps people get their service or product across to people.

The research that I have done has helped me out greatly as it has given me ideas on what to put in my Newspaper to attract people, where to put my billboard and how to display the billboard, also how to set out my web page so that it will attract people and make them read more. I have also asked people why they read Local Newspapers and as a result I have found out what is the most important things to include in my Newspaper so that people will enjoy it, for example people like to read the Local Newspaper to see if their friends are in it and also to know when events are on and where they are, therefore I have to get people 'in the know' of their area so that they will feel a real part of their community!

At the very top of the page there are small advertisement logo's which may be looked at and help people out if they need it. The name of the paper is done quite well and looks formal, with the traditional Black letters on a White background which stands out very well! Also to make it look even smarter they have a badge logo in between the words 'KENT' and 'SUNDAY' on top of the word 'on' which makes in central and looks good, also the lower cased 'on' makes the other words in the title stand out and gives room for the badge.

There is a red bubble with white writing saying 'INSIDE YOUR FREE COPY' this stands out very well! also notice how they have put it all in capital because it is 'FREE' and people are always attracted to that word. There is also a blue strip with white writing on it which explains to you what you are getting inside the paper, in this case it is a 12 page pullout on education, this could either appeal to Keen students or parents who want their children to do well at school. Underneath this strip on the left of the paper there is a very large heading which says 'POLICE IN FIGHT TO DITCH MERGER' this attracts people to the paper, also the words 'POLICE', 'FIGHT' and 'DITCH' are all words that people will be caught by! If anyone See's the word 'Police' then they know that something serious has happened and will want to read about it and find out what has happened. On the far right of the front page there is a picture of a Hawk skimming a lake in Kent, underneath the picture there is a headline which says, 'Crowds flock to bird of prey' this is quite an extreme story and will definitely get peoples attention and make them want to buy and read the Newspaper as it is a very peculiar story!

On the second page of this Newspaper there is a list down the center of the page which tells you what is in this addition of the Newspaper, for each story there is a picture of relevance and then a short paragraph under the picture to explain the picture better, then at the end of the paragraph in bold it lets you know what page you can find the story on and then read up more and get all the details! This is very helpful as people reading the newspaper will not be searching through the newspaper to find a story that they like as they will already know where to look.

On the left hand side of the second page there is a range of advertisements from a Butchers to Conservatory fitters, if a person was to look at this newspaper and see these adverts then it could persuade then to use the services or could give them the option that they have been looking for and help them out. On the right hand side of the second paper there is quite an inspirational story about a teenager saving a 2 year old girls life from a blazing house fire! they use a picture of the boy holding the girl in his arms whilst he is still covered in ash, this is quite a powerful picture and has quite a moving affect on the readers, under this picture there is a headline saying, 'Local 16 year old hero battle's to save a 2 year old from house fire!' this headline will definitely catch peoples eyes who are looking at the Newspaper, under this headline there is quite a lot of text telling the story that matches the headline and the picture.

As you can see the name of the Newspaper at the top is in your classic Newspaper style, big black bold writing on a pure white background, these two colours make it really easy to see the words and means that it Will catch your eye! Underneath the name there is a small red column that stretches across the page, this column is red and has white text over it which tell you the date of the newspaper, the website for the Newspaper and how much it costs, all of this information is vital!

There is a quite bit blue advertisement strip, on top of this main blue background there is some white and red which both work with blue and stand out! It is talking about winning a 'FREE' virgin balloon for your dad on fathers day, notice how they put the word free in massive capitals so it stands out and attracts people in to it. On the left hand side of the paper there is a big and out there headline, 'DRIVERS FURY AT FAILED REPAIRS' the use of capitals gives the impression of shouting with genuine anger about the roadworks. Next to the headline there is a picture of the 'Skid Risk 20mph' sign and then the cars slowly driving through, this picture gives you a feel of the drivers frustrations with the roadworks.

On the right of the front page there is a smaller headline saying 'Don't demolish church', this headline is a much less anger based headline as the other, this headline is just being said in normal dialogue and quietly trying to get their point across to people in the Local Area, obviously people in the area like their church and do not want to see it smashed to dust! At the very bottom of the front page there are three quite large advertisements which are all in different colours so that you can tell them apart from each other.

On the second page of this Newspaper There are three different story's with a Picture on the left, a heading next to the picture on the right and then text underneath the heading which goes into detail about the picture and the heading and fits nicely into three boxes that take up half of the page. At the very top of the page there is various advertisement in very obvious colours like yellow orange and blue, all on black background. On the right hand side of the second page there is a continence which shows what story's are in this addition and where you can find them! The picture and text for each story are little teasers for the actual thing which is in the paper, this is very useful as it means that people can find exactly what they want to read about and know where they can find it.

My first Real Media Artifact is the Star Courier, as you can see the layout is quite attractive to the eye and will attract people to the newspaper, in the middle right of the front page there is a picture that links in with one of the main story's in the Local Newspaper. The "Star" part of the name uses colours quite well to make it stand out, they put the writing 'star' in white and put it over a red background. Then the courier part of the name is written in black and is over a white background, these colours make the name of the paper stand out.

Under the name of the Newspaper there are various advertisements, this makes the Newspaper money because of advertisement and also helps people out if they are looking for a certain service or shop. Then on the centre left of the front cover there is a headline about Alcoholic's attacking a bus driver, the story takes up the majority of the right hand side of the page, then at the very bottom of the page there is a quite large advertisement for people who need their kitchen scrapped, also below the picture it says about whats inside and tells you the weather.

On the second page of the Newspaper there is quite a few pictures dotted around, people do tend to prefer pictures to a lot of text. On the far right there is a picture of two mums and their daughter at a 'Fun Day', this lets people know what has been going on in their community, underneath the picture there is some text that explains the picture and what else happened at the 'Free Fun Day'. Next to the picture of the mum's and child on the left there is another picture of two boys having fun at the same event as the mums and then on the left of that there is picture of a 5 year old learning how to spin a plate, these pictures give a real feel of what the vibe was like there.

On the left middle side of the second page there is quite a large advertisement for 'Lynford Tyres' where they have a sale on, it gives the address and numbers of three different stores so that you can get your local one, the colours of the advertisement are red, yellow, blue, white and black, these colours all contrast with each other and make each other stand out clearly. In the centre of the second page there is quite an inspirational story about a 14 year old girl making it onto TV for singing, the headline is 'Teenage pop star hits TV screens' under the headline there are several paragraphs on the story and then on the left of it there is a picture of the girl singing on TV, this story gives people a good feel about their Local area as youngsters are doing well.

At the bottom of the page there is a list of whats inside this week, they do this in quite a good way by having a row of pictures that correspond with the text underneath each picture, it also says under the text what page you can find the story on, this is very helpful for the reader because if they see a story that they like then they won't need to worry about trying to scan through the paper to find it. Finally in the bottom left of the second Page there is a list of contacts that people might want to get in touch with, for example; Leaflets and Inserts for advertising inside the Newspaper.

1. What Gender are you?
As you can see the majority of the people that i asked were Female, therefore the answers that i get are going to be answered by more Females than Males. As a result of this the feedback I get should be good as girls tend to pay more attention to detail than boys.

2. How old are you?
Out of the 30 people that I asked they were mainly 16 year olds so my feedback will be more of a younger opinion, the rest of people that I asked where 17 and 18, as I only asked the younger generations the feedback that I get will be from younger people points of views and will have a young feel about it when I get to doing my Newspaper.

3. What is your favourite Newspaper? The most popular Newspapers are The Sun and The Daily Express, the other two most popular Newspapers are The Daily Mail and The Times, these Newspapers are ones that would probably appeal to younger people appart from The Daily Mail and The Times which are usually read by older people.

4. What information do you tend to read a newspaper for? The majority of people who read Newspapers do it for all the Gossip, and to find out what is going on in celeberity's lives or what is the latest TV shows etc. The next biggest reason that people read the Newspaper is for the sport section, this would usually be boys who are interested in this part of the paper. People also read the Newspaper for serious matters that have happened around the world, the rest of the people I asked said they read the Newspaper for another reason.

5. Do you base your Newspaper choice on the front cover?

The majority of people that I asked said that they base their purchase of their Newspaper on the front cover, therefore if they like what they see then they will buy it! This feedback lets me know that if I want people to buy my Local Newspaper then I will have to make the front cover appealing to people so that they will be attracted to it.

6. Do you tend to buy a Newspaper every day?

Less people buy Newspapers everyday than the people who do not buy a Newspaper everyday, this means that people do not see need in buying a newspaper everyday and only get one every other day or even fewer times, this shows me that it might be a better idea if I was to only do a Newspaper every other day and then talk about the two days before so that people would be more interested.

7. When do you usually read your newspaper? Most of the people that I asked read their Newspapers in the evening after work or school for example, this tends to be a good time of the day to unwind and get into your Newspaper and enjoy it more than if you had worry's on your mind about work or family. The next most popular time to read a Newspaper was in the morning, this is also a good time as it can wake you up and you can knowledge yourself before you set out on your day, therefore you can impress people with your knowledge and be 'in the know'. The rest of the people that I asked either read their Newspaper in the afternoon although some people may be at work, or at lunch when they are on a break of have a spare minute or so.

8. Do you read your local Newspaper?
Why?..

Out of the 30 people that I asked the majority of people did not read their Local Newspaper, and they explained that they would only really read it if a friend was in it or something like that, Football team for example. So to increase the demand of a Local Newspaper you need to include more people in it from the Local area and then more people will buy the Local Newspaper so that they can see themselves or a friend.

9. What are the main things that you look for in a local Newspaper?

The most common answer was people that you know, although some people said that they look for Local football scores and other information such as, new shops openning and special offers in shops around their area. As a result I will be putting in more Local people into my Newspaper and also all of the information that people want, I will put in Local football tables and scores and have various information about special offers and oppenning shops dotted around my paper.

10. Would you say that local Newspapers are still popular or not?

Over half of the people that I asked all agreed than Local Newspapers are not as popular as they used to be, therefore a change is needed so that people will start getting their Local Newspapers again! I think that if I can make my Local Newspaper more fun and interesting then the word will spread and more people will sign themselves up for my Local Newspaper.

The majority of people that I asked said that they wouldn't really look on websites to find out about their Local Newspapers, however there will still alot of people who said that they would do it. Also with the Internet being so popular in todays society I think that this will catch on and people will go onto my website to find out more about my Local Newspaper and how they can get it through the post.

A big majority of the people that I asked said that a website would encourage them to buy my Local Newspaper, as this feedback is good I will defifnitely try to make my website as good as possible as it will lead on to the people buying my Newspaper, on my website I will put the cost of my Newspaper and how to get hold of them. On my website I will also give small teasers of what to expect in the next addition.

17. If you saw a website’s address on a billboard would you go online and have a look?

Nearly three quaters of the people that I asked said that if they saw the web address for my Local Newspaper on a billboard they would not go online and have a look, however more than a quater said they would so it is not a complete faliure, therefore I will go ahead with this idea and make sure that my web address is very bold and will stick in peoples minds!
